Balance Beam

Isn't it incredible how our bodies as children effortlessly do things we often take for granted at that age. From the way our knees power us through runs and trampoline jumps, to our resilient eyes capable of marathon screen sessions without a hint of fatigue, and our ears enduring hours of loud music without missing a beat. And let's not forget our flawless balance. From gliding on the balance beam to the joy of bike riding, hula hooping, and even the nostalgic skip it, our sense of balance feels like second nature.

Now as an adult, I realize our ability as kids to balance without even thinking about it, is a hidden superpower we possess without even realizing it. As we grow older and become more familiar with the changes in our body, it's easy to keep an eye on our eyesight, hearing, and metabolism but somehow overlook the gradual decline in our balance.

I have unfortunately experienced vertigo this year giving me a wake-up call to appreciate the balance we often take for granted. And we need it, because good balance is what prevents injury and doing basic daily task.

Balancing is crucial not just in our physical bodies but also in our lives and the world as a whole. Just like how vertigo has highlighted to me the importance of equilibrium within us, it's a reminder that finding balance in various aspects of life is key to our well-being.

Our media outlets have been shining a bright light on how things seem to be getting out of balance in various aspects of our lives. From what we eat, to how we govern, even our environment and the way we connect as people, the scale seems to be tipping towards extremes. It's like we've taken the steadiness out of the equation and put ourselves at risk of harm and instability. Maybe it's time we find our way back to a more harmonious middle ground, where moderation and empathy can help us regain that much-needed equilibrium.

Mr. Miyagi wisely pointed out in "The Karate Kid," balance is not only crucial in the realm of karate but in all aspects of our lives. His words resonate with the important truth that aligning harmony within ourselves and the world around us can lead to a better understanding and resolution of conflicts. It's a reminder that embracing different perspectives and finding a middle round can often bring about a beautiful balanced perspective that benefits everyone involved.

Maybe the key to finding harmony again in our world and within ourselves lies in remembering the often overlooked superpower of balance, we once did so effortlessly as a kid.
