To be honest, the first time I was moved by one of my favorite worship songs, that I often revert to when I want to feel closer to my creator, was in the movie Sister Act. The first time I watched it, Shazam was still a distant dream yet to grace the world back then. So to find the song was a bit of a treasure hunt. Which I eventually did and downloaded it on LimeWire, and yes I'm revealing my age with that statement. And though there is many renditions of the song, I will stand by my opinion, even when Im old and feeble, that Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount's rendition is the best.
As I've listened to the song throughout the years, the idea of the spiritual significance of a sparrow didn't quite catch my attention until recently. However, I think it's like that for most of us, certain songs, books, or movies can grow with us over time. We discovering new aspects that resonate with us as we navigate through life's twists and turns.
As my curiosity about why God would choose a sparrow for symbolism over the array of beautiful birds in the world, I began reading about these small creatures. Through my research, I began to understand the significance and value that these humble little birds hold.
Sparrows are quite the adaptable little creatures, preferring the hustle and bustle of manmade structures over untouched natural habitats. You can spot them through city centers, suburbs, and farms, making themselves right at home wherever they go. They are reliable residents that stick around even during the chilly winter months. They have no fear about reclaiming their old nesting spots, setting up shop in new ones, or even swooping in to establish dominance before the migrating birds return in the spring. They have easy going attitudes towards and ability to thrive in diverse environments.
After reading about them, I decided to Google the symbolism of sparrows, and yes, I actually Googled. It said the sparrow represents God's care and provision for his creation, emphasizes the importance of humility, and conveys the beautiful idea that even the smallest creatures are known and cherished by God.
I'm coming to recognize that God's messages of love are flawlessly delivered if we simply pause to notice. It's incredible how He works in mysterious ways, nudging us to seek Him out and uncover the depths of His unfaltering love that surrounds us everywhere. He picked a bird that defies common instincts and chooses to live in human-altered environments, recognizing that this is where the presence of God is most needed. And in a world where seeking warmth seems to be the norm, the quiet strength of this bird, defies expectations by choosing to stay during the winter months. This bird, with its decision to linger despite the cold, serves as a gentle reminder that our creator chooses to stay in times when others will not.
In a world where we often overlook the ordinary, it's refreshing to be reminded that God's presence can be found in the most unexpected places. Just like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered, the less obvious choices God makes serve as gentle reminders that everything holds value in His eyes. As you navigate through your days, take a moment to pause and appreciate the beauty in the seemingly insignificant details around you - for they may just be the missing puzzle piece that illuminates the extraordinary in the everyday.
