It's no secret that most of us are continuously on a journey to enhance various aspects of our lives, be it our mental and physical well-being, our living space, our career, or our relationship with others. The importance though of forming positive relationships often begin in our earliest years, long before we are aware of it.
As kids, we were mesmerized by the magic world of Disney princess movies, dreaming of our fairy tale happy endings. Then as young adults, we found our favorite feel-good romantic comedies like "10 Things I Hate About You," "She's All That," and "When Harry Met Sally," where love always triumphs. And we find ourselves wondering if our lives will unfold like a perfect rom-com script.
Then for some of us, we find our adult life is by no means playing out as we imagined. After a few bad apples or in a relationship, not checking all the boxes. Many of us, go searching for that magical solution that will make everything fall into place. Whether we're chatting with friends, diving into relationship help books, or mindlessly scrolling through social media looking for a 90-second fix, to give us the answer of love.
Through scrolling reels or the deep conversations we have with others about why our relationship isn't working or why we keep getting bad apples, it's quite common for all of us to have a mental image of the perfect partner or ideal relationship simmering in the depths of our minds.
When I was younger, I thought the perfect relationship looked more like, Patrick from "10 Things I Hate About You". Where that bad boy with a good heart seemed to prevail. Or as child, the prince rescuing the princess seemed to be appealing.
As time has passed and I've matured, my journey towards a stronger connection with my higher power has changed my perspective on love. While I still indulged in romantic comedies, I now feel like I understand what genuine, authentic love truly entails.
In my personal journey towards connecting with my creator, I've come to realize that genuine love brings an inner peace to your spirit. While the thrill of excitement that "Patrick" may bring to your life momentarily can be enticing, as you navigate through the stages of life, what truly nourishes the soul is a sense of peace.
Or the world full of fairy tales and princesses longing for their knight in shining armor, there's something uniquely comforting about someone who simply appreciates and supports you for who you are. Unlike the rescue scenario, having someone who doesn't aim to change you but rather cherishes your authentic self can be even more magical than the most enchanting Disney movie.
In the midst of life's complexities, perhaps the simplicity of love lies in rekindling our connection with our creator. It's in embracing a love that cherishes our true essence without expecting anything in return, guiding us to recognize our genuine needs amidst what we desire.
